History of Amouage
Founded over a quarter of a century ago, Amouage is a niche luxury fragrance house that draws inspiration from its birthplace of the Sultanate of Oman, infusing reference points from a rich and colorful heritage that fires the imagination of all who come into contact with its wonderful products.
Renowned for creating some of the most finely crafted and exotic fragrances in the world, the House restores artistry to perfumery to create extraordinarily beautiful scents with a distinct point of view and sources the globe for unique and the highest quality of ingredients.
The perfumes of Arabia are a reminder of a glorious past. During the great empire of the Caliphs of Baghdad, when science and scholarship flourished, the control of the perfume trade was one of many mathematical and technical breakthroughs. The Caliphs enjoyed perfume and encouraged its manufacture, creating ‘sweet smells’ for mosques and buildings with their esteemed fragrances.
Books on perfumery and distillation by the great Arabic philosophers and scientists - al Kindi, around 800 AD; Rhazes, around 865 AD and Avicenna around 980 AD, show that for the first time in history Arabs made the mass production of perfume possible.
These perfumes and secret techniques became great treasures of the world with Arabian parfumiers considered the best - unmatched for centuries, even by the French.
Amouage is a national treasure of Oman, a fragrance made in the ancient art of Arabian perfumery. Its history and heritage run rich and deep – one of the unique features of this luxury perfume brand.
In 1983, His Highness Sayyid Hamad bin Hamoud al bu Said, decided to restore the great Arabian art of perfumery to the region. This resulted in the first Amouage fragrance - the most valuable perfume in the world. The Perfumery was then built in Muscat, Oman, and still provides the individual hand finish to every bottle of Amouage perfume today. A unique feature of this traditionally operated headquarters, with a worldwide distribution network, is a tourist showroom, which welcomes every visitor with traditional Arabian hospitality.
The original Amouage fragrance, created by the legendary French parfumier, Guy Robert, is now sold in over 20 countries worldwide. It can also be purchased on major airlines and at duty free stores. The fragrance range extends from the exclusive Gold Flasks to the Gold, Ciel, Dia, Eau and Esprit d’Amouage ranges and Silver Cologne.
Guy Robert, the legendary ‘nez’ of France, was given the task of creating the world’s most valuable perfume. No expense was spared, as he put his heart and soul and generations of family experience into the composition of Amouage.
Guy learnt his perfumery trade in his youth, in Provence, from three generations of his family devoted to this business. During his long and remarkable career, he has created masterpieces for the great houses of Hermes, Dior, Rochas, Amouage, and many more. Guy refers to Amouage as his ‘symphony… the crowning glory of my career’.
Indeed, it is a masterpiece - compelling, mysterious and distinctive, a perfect reflection of the name Amouage - meaning waves of emotion.
Gold, frankincense and myrrh – Amouage is the three gifts of the East combined into one fragrance, through the skill of the French Master Parfumier, Guy Robert. Armed with a brief to spare no expense in creating ‘the most valuable perfume in the world’, Guy set about his task to find the earth’s most precious ingredients, to fulfil his dream. In creating Amouage, Guy used over 120 natural ingredients from around the world. From southern Oman he took the finest silver frankincense of the Dhofar mountains, and Rock Rose from the secret forbidding mountains of Jebel Akhdar.
To these unique and classic scents he added a subtle range of other ingredients, with top notes of rose, jasmine, lily of the valley; heart notes of myrrh, patchouli, sandalwood and orris; and base notes of ambergris and civet, not to mention Ylang Ylang from Morocco and Paraguayan Gaiac wood.Creating this incredibly complex perfume was entrusted to Creations Aromatiques in Paris – it is one of their most treasured classics. It is then shipped to the Perfumery in Oman, where it is macerated and matured, before being bottled and packaged individually, by hand.
AMOUAGE won the Frontier STAR PRODUCT of the year at the Tax Free, World Exhibition in Cannes, France. It is the only product from outside the USA, Europe and Japan ever to win this prestigious award - a rare honour indeed, making it the only recognised international prestige brand from the entire region.
